I visited one of Shropshire’s most dangerous road junctions – here’s how it went

I have learned that patience is key at the Llynclys crossroads.

I headed to the junction of the A483 between Oswestry and Llanymynech on Thursday to meet North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan following her call to action and asks the Prime Minister in Parliament.

National Highways had previously rated the junction as the worst in the region when looking at locations where a number of incidents had occurred. However, the state-owned company has now stated that the junction is ranked 54th out of 110 on its current list of “problematic junctions” in the Midlands.

However, for me it is one of the most problematic roads – after my experience – and I understand why residents want to avoid it whenever possible and gathering for change on site.

I would be lying if I said I didn’t fear what would come after the alarming calls for road adaptation. Embarking on my first meeting and interview with the MP since joining the Shropshire Star newsroom made me quite nervous; However, with no experience driving at the Llynclys junction, I was worried about what awaited me as I drove through the beautiful villages and surrounding countryside.

I approached the union after passing through Knockin and the B396. Stopping at the junction, I noticed the lovely and much-loved country pub The White Lion, but also heavy traffic.

At first my wait seemed endless, I continually looked left and right looking for an opportunity to cross safely. My vision was obstructed by a bend to my left, and the fact that the junction is at the foot of a dip in the road only adds to the problems.

I waited and waited for more than a minute, if not longer, for sure. Another car in front of me wanted to cross from the A495 to the B396 and was also waiting for an opening.

I realized instantly that this was a busy road and also a fast one, as vehicles drove down the hill from both sides to the end where the junction is located.

Patience and prioritizing safety is key. I waited until opportunity and a quiet moment arose to cross.

Waiting time, however, can be frustrating for drivers. The same thing happened after I concluded my meeting, and it took patience and maximum attention to my surroundings and the path.

Speaking to the North Shropshire MP, he revealed his desire to redesign the junction and said he will push for funding to be allocated so the work can be carried out. Mrs. Morgan also revealed that she avoids lynclys crossroads whenever possible, saying, “It’s not worth it.”

In my opinion, the ideal would be a roundabout at that location. However, I understand that this may not be suitable or achievable.

Although I crossed twice safely and did not witness any close incidents, after hearing the reports and concerns of Shropshire residents, and experiencing the crossroads myself, I fully understand and support the need for changes and implementation of measures to increase security on the site.

Mrs. Morgan revealed that it could be at least 12 months until funds are available for actionbut National Highways has stated that they are “conducting a study” that will help them “plan and carry out a number of improvements to this junction”.
