Man Utd: Neville insists Ten Hag sacking ‘was decided a few weeks ago’; give three reasons for the decision

Gary Neville insists the Man Utd board will have “decided a few weeks ago” to sack Erik ten Hag as he reacts to the decision.

The Red Devils revealed on Monday morning that they had made the call to fire the Dutchman After their terrible start to the new Premier League season, they followed it up with a 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Sunday.

Manchester United They currently sit in 14th position, just two points ahead of newly promoted Leicester City, and the Red Devils have won just three of their first nine games of the campaign.

But Neville believes the Man Utd board made the decision to sack Ten Hag after losing 3-0 to Tottenham at the end of September in a humiliating home defeat.

Neville said in sky sports: “I thought he would come. Watching that Tottenham game a few weeks ago I felt like I had seen it before. It was a bad day for Manchester United and a bad day for Erik ten Hag.

“The situation got worse, yesterday the missed chances were unacceptable, they should have been two or three up at half-time.

“Overall, the challenges of results and performances have made the owners decide to dismiss him. I don’t think anyone is really surprised this morning.

“I suspect the Tottenham game was probably a catalyst for them to start thinking about a new manager.

“You look at who’s available and then you try to think about the moment. You have half a hope that the manager can change the situation, but 99 times out of 100, the tide is against you and he continues to do so.

“They have chosen a moment that was decided a few weeks ago. That came yesterday.

“They would have started the process to find Erik ten Hag’s successor.”

Identifying the reasons why Man Utd made the decision to sack Ten Hag, Neville pointed to a lack of playing style, recruitment and the Dutchman’s failure to get the best out of a talented team.

Neville added: “I think the lack of identity and style is something that has been a mystery for the last two and a half seasons.

“Recruiting has been terrible at times, but I think there is a group of players who can play better than them.

“The lack of style has been the biggest problem. It’s a real struggle to watch them play and it hasn’t changed in the last 18 months. “That has been as bad as the results.”
