‘Additional Metro replacement buses for the match between Newcastle United and Chelsea

A fleet of Metro replacement buses will be running for football fans heading to the midweek cup match between Newcastle United and Chelseawhich takes place during a major line closure in the Metro system.

The planned line closure coincides with the League Cup match between Newcastle United and Chelsea at home. St. James Park on Wednesday, October 30.

Nexus, the public body that runs Metro, is ensuring the extra buses run while Metro lines are closed beyond Gateshead Stadium for five consecutive days, from Monday 28 October to Friday 1 November.

A total of 65 buses will operate to help fans from areas south of the River Tyne get to and from the sold-out football match.

Fans are advised to allow enough extra time to reach the match using the spare buses. They also have the option of getting off at Gateshead Stadium or Gateshead Interchange if they want to connect with Tube services from those stations to get to the match.

The Metro main line closure occurs between Gateshead Stadium and South Shields and Gateshead Stadium and South Hylton. It is needed so Nexus can replace the track crossing at Pelaw, a key intersection and one of the busiest in the Metro system that carries 400 trains a day.

Paul Welford, Nexus Major Projects, said: “We are ensuring that many replacement buses are provided to customers during the main line closure. It is our top priority.

“During the five-day closure period there will be 45 buses running every day in the affected areas, and we will increase that number to 65 buses on Wednesday 30 October for Newcastle United’s home match against Chelsea in the Cup. the league.

“Metro services will operate as usual in Newcastle and North Tyneside, but customers in areas south of the Tyne will need to plan ahead and use replacement buses. The key is to allow enough time to get to the game and be patient while we get everyone home afterward.

“A good option for customers is to get off the replacement bus at Gateshead Interchange and from there take a Metro service to Newcastle city centre.

“Our project to replace the Metro track crossing at Pelaw is a once-in-a-generation job and is necessary to ensure Metro’s long-term future. We regret the inconvenience caused to customers.

“It’s not a good time to close a Metro line, but we planned this project well in advance to coincide with the October midterm holidays, since customer trips tend to be less when schools are closed and interruptions are minimized. “The draw for this particular cup match, with Newcastle United playing at home, took place long after these works were planned and unfortunately we will not be able to postpone this vital modernization project.”

Nexus will use the five-day closure to carry out other important works, including track drainage work, cable repairs and track alignment work, all elements that increase the long-term reliability of the network for our passengers.

Metro lines will reopen their services on Saturday, November 2.

Replacement buses will begin running services from Gateshead Interchange. The 900 will reach South Shields calling at most Metro stops on the route and the 901 will reach South Hylton calling at or near all stations.

Two express bus replacement services will also operate, stopping at select stations on both routes during peak hours only. The X900 will run through South Shields – Jarrow – Heworth – Felling – Gateshead Stadium – Gateshead Interchange. The X901 will run through Park Lane – Sunderland – St Peter’s – Stadium of Light – Seaburn – Heworth – Felling – Gateshead Stadium – Gateshead Interchange.

Nexus has invested £446m in infrastructure renewal since 2010, as well as launching a new £362m fleet of trains to deliver a more reliable system used by 31m customers a year, ensuring Metro’s longevity for many years.
