Five injured in knife attack in Beijing, including three children

A knife attack at a prestigious primary school in the Chinese capital of Beijing led to five injured people being rushed to hospital, including three children.

The knife attack is understood to have taken place outside the school gates, and five people were rushed to hospital as bystanders attempted to intervene.

Three children were hospitalized, but none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.

The attack occurred in mid-afternoon in Haidian district, northwest of Beijing, and a 50-year-old man was arrested at the scene.

The man, surnamed Tang, is being investigated by police.

Images circulating on social media showed two schoolchildren on the ground.

Images from the scene also showed a man, his face covered in blood, being tied to the ground.

There have been multiple knife attacks in China this year, and several of them involved schoolchildren.

Last month, a 10-year-old Japanese student died after being attacked with a knife near his school in the southern city of Shenzhen.

Another attack in June at a school bus stop at a Japanese school in Suzhou injured a woman and her son.

A Chinese woman who tried to intervene was murdered.

In early October, three people were killed and 15 others injured in a knife attack at a Shanghai supermarket.

China strictly restricts private gun ownership, so knives and homemade explosives are among the most common weapons.

Investigations into the latest attack continue.
