Jinks, without fixed direction, admitted the crime and was sentenced in the Nottingham Crown Court of February 7 to eight years and nine months, with an extended license period of six years.

In an impact statement of the victim, the woman said: ‘As this has happened, I do not feel that you can ever leave alone, at least not in the short term.

‘I feel that I would be terrified to do this and look constantly behind my shoulder asking me who can appear behind me. I have heard that these things happened, but I never thought this would happen to me.

Detective Constable Esther Hodson, who directed the investigation for the Derbyshire police, said: ‘This was a really horrible incident in which Jinks saw this woman, followed her and waited for her to attack her. She bravely tried to fight him and fortunately when her screams were heard by people who lived nearby, Jinks was arrested on the spot and fled the area.

“It is clearly a very dangerous individual who represents a real threat to women, so I’m glad that he is now out of the streets and behind bars.” I would like to praise the incredible strength and courage of women throughout this case.

‘The description and evidence he provided helped us quickly identify Jinks and then lock him up and she has shown exemplary courage from this horrible night.

“We receive large amounts of CCTV from companies and housing owners in the days after this incident, all of which have been crucial to help us build the case against Jinks and make sure they send it to prison where it belongs.”
