Companies react to the new Plan of the Jackson County Prosecutor to address real estate crime

Kansas City, Mo. (KCTV) – The sound of shattered glass is a too familiar sound that is heard in Kansas City and companies and restaurants stay to collect the pieces.

Now, Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office has a new team that will focus solely on real estate crimes.

It is called the Unit of Crime Strategies and consists of three lawyers.

They will work directly with the business owners and the police to identify and process the repeat offenders.

“I see that we really have our heads now and thinking about crime? Oh, it’s probably something we should address, ”said Matt Shatto, the owner of Betty Raes.

Shatto knows too much the pain of the crime against property, and was not familiar with the new crime unit of the prosecutor, but said he is on board.

“I think the degree to which we can obtain consistency with any level of bureaucracy, be it the police department, be it the prosecutor’s office, I think it is positive.”

Shatto shared some of his concerns with the new crime unit.

“However, at the end of the day, I cannot imagine that three people will be enough people to deal with the crime we see during the summer,” he said.

“I think having something like this feels less reactionary,” said Jackie González, city barrel pizza + patio.

González said he appreciates these new steps that the city is taking to keep businesses safe.

“I feel safe to know that there are data collected by a group that is delegated to handle these situations. That makes me feel better, ”he said.

The office is also adopting a proactive approach, providing violation notification forms to companies.

  • Print 2 copies
  • Complete both copies
  • Stops in front of an internal security chamber in your business and deliver the form to the person who invades
  • Clip the part of the video that shows that the form gives to the person
  • Keep the video and your copy of the form for your records

“To give this, I feel empowered,” González said about forms.

González said he gives him a sense of security and feels comfortable delivering it if necessary.

“Knowing that the city is doing something to try to unite and provide something to create a timeline, to create a database where we can send information, it is definitely one step in the right direction,” Gonzalez said.

Shatto, on the other hand, said that although it is a good idea, he does not feel so safe.

“I like anything proactive, right? But at the same time, in that specific example, I have a little concern to put my 16 to 20 years in a place where you will address someone who potentially has the opportunity to commit some crimes in the future, ”he explained.

While there is still some uncertainty with the new approach, there is optimism.

“I hope that having a delegate group of lawyers or prosecutors to handle the situation can finally do something about it,” González said.

The new crime strategies unit will begin working on March 10.
