MP GOVT prepares for burning trial carbure

Dhar/Indore, February 27 (PTI) The preparations have begun to incinerate 10 tons of the 337 tons of carbide waste from the trial -based junction in the Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh after the Supreme Court refused to intervene in the matter, authorities said Thursday.

Early in the day, the Apex court refused to interfere with the order of the Superior Court of Madhya Pradesh on the change of waste linked to the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy and eliminate it in Pithampur in the Dhar district.

The Apex Court has asked the injured parties, including members of civil society organizations that oppose the elimination of waste, which are approaching the Superior Court, which is listening to the matter.

After the SC order, the administration has intensified the security in the industrial city of Pithampur, an official said.

Almost 500 police officers have been deployed in the area. Senior officials have also arrived at the scene, he said.

Those who oppose the disposal of the waste said they played the doors of the HC. They said the SC listened to them and told them to present their case in the Superior Court.

“Our lawyers have said that they would present our case strongly in the HC. The movement will continue. We will talk to the people of Pithampur through our lawyers and take the movement forward in the way we tell us to do it, ”said Sandeep Raguvanshi, one of the protesters.

After the position of the SC in the matter, the Commissioner of the Indore Division, Deepak Singh, said: “The preparations have begun for the first trial of burning the waste of the carbide factory of the Union in the Pithampur Waste Elimination Unit.” According to the HC order, 10 tons of waste will be burned in the first phase of this test, he told PTI.

On the intermediate night of December 2 and 3, 1984, Metil (MIC) highly poisonous gas leaked from the union carbide factory in Bhopal. At least 5,479 people were killed and thousands were listed. It is considered one of the world’s largest industrial disasters.

The officials transported 337 tons of waste from the union carbide factory in the capital of MP to an installation in Pithampur, about 250 km away, on January 2 as part of a plan to get rid of the material.

On January 6, the HC had ordered the state government to take measures within six weeks to get rid of waste following security guidelines.

Since this waste was taken to Pithampur, this industrial area has seen several protests. The protesters have expressed apprehensions about the damage to the human population and the environment if the waste is incinerated there.

The state government says that there are solid agreements in the Pithampur unit for the safe elimination of carbide waste.

The state government has also organized the ‘Jan Samvad’ programs in Pithampur and their surrounding places to spread awareness about the waste disposal process.

According to the state government, the waste includes the soil of the Bhopal factory now Shut, residues of reactors, residues of Sevin (pesticides), naphthale waste and “semiprocessed” waste.

The State Pollution Control Board says that according to scientific evidence, the effect of Sevin and Naphthale in this waste has now become “almost insignificant.”

According to the pollution control board, there is no existence of isocianate gas or radioactive particles of any kind in this waste. PTI COR HWP MAS NR
