Bhopal gas tragedy: SC refuses to intervene in the matter on waste elimination; Case monitored by the Superior Court of MP

Bhopal gas tragedy: the Supreme Court clarified on Thursday that it will not intervene in the matter regarding the elimination of waste in the Union carbide As the matter is already being monitored by the Superior Court of Madhya Pradesh.

The highly toxic gas methyl isocyanate (MIC) leaked from the union carbide factory during the intermediate night from December 2 to 3, 1984, killing 5,479 people and mutilating more than five Lakh, PTI reported.

It is considered among the worst industrial disasters of the world.

A Bank of Judges Br Gavai and Ag Masih also refused to remain in the trial of the disposal of the waste of the Union Carbide Plant India Ltd. said that the experts of Dutei, NGRI and CPCB have given their points of view on the issues, which were considered both by the Superior Court and by the panel of experts.

The Bank asked the injured parties, including members of civil society, who will approach the Superior Court that is seized of the matter.

On February 25, the Superior Court asked the authorities to report it on the precautions taken to eliminate waste. Around 377 tons of hazardous waste from the union carbide now disappeared moved to the Pithampur industrial area, about 250 km from Bhopal and 30 km from Indore, for elimination in a plant.
