Jackie Langford wants justice after brother Marvin Sledge died of fentanyl overdose

Athens, Alabama (WAF) – Jackie Langford wants justice for her brother’s death from a fentanyl overdose earlier this month.

Marvin Sledge, 44, was last seen alive on Oct. 12 outside a J Mart gas station in Athens with a man and a woman.

Langford and his family were notified of Sledge’s overdose four hours later via a Facebook post.

“It’s just devastating,” he said.

People near the gas station told Langford that after Sledge was given fentanyl and he ingested the drug, the two put his unconscious brother in the back seat of their car.

They then drove him to a nearby house in Athens, where Ring camera footage shows his car arriving. The driver then runs into the house and asks for Narcan (it can reverse the effects of fentanyl).

Sledge was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Langford says his brother’s death was not reported to the family immediately and they were not even allowed to see his body for six days.

She says his death is extremely hard on her and her mother. Marvin’s twin brother, Marlon, died six years ago in a car accident.

In the 16 days since Sledge’s death, authorities have not arrested anyone.

Langford says he doesn’t just want answers. She wants justice.

“He didn’t do this. We know he didn’t do this,” Langford said. “

Limestone County Sheriff Josh McLaughlin says this case is still under investigation and his department will not make any arrests until there is probable cause.

Sledge’s overdose is one of two fentanyl-related deaths in Limestone County this month. On Sunday, investigators charged Rebecca Myrick, 60, with involuntary manslaughter in the overdose death of 54-year-old Lawrence Light.

This comes months after Alabama’s Involuntary Manslaughter Law was passed, charging anyone who creates, sells or distributes fentanyl with involuntary manslaughter.

Myrick is currently being held in the Limestone County Jail without bond.
