Arrest warrant against President Yoon of South Korea; people demonstrate near his residence in Seoul | N18G

On December 31, 2024, a South Korean court approved an arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was impeached and suspended from power for his decision to impose martial law on December 3. This is the first time in South Korean history that an arrest has been made. A court order has been issued against a sitting president. Yoon is under investigation for possible insurrection charges, as his martial law decree briefly sparked clashes between military troops and parliament staff. Martial law was quickly repealed after a parliamentary vote, but it shocked the nation and alarmed international allies. Yoon has not responded to multiple summonses for questioning. The investigation is ongoing and police have attempted unsuccessfully to raid the presidential office. A trial has begun at the Constitutional Court to decide whether Yoon will be reinstated or permanently removed from office, with a decision expected within 180 days. The next court hearing is scheduled for January 3.
