Man faces charges in connection with fatal shooting Monday

A 20-year-old man has been charged with fatally shooting another man in Lowell on Monday night, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said.

Lowell police responded to the area of Middlesex and Maude streets just before 8 p.m. When they arrived, they found the man, identified as Nikhl Israni, 24, with a gunshot wound, prosecutors said in a statement.

He was taken to Lowell General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the release.

Authorities say a preliminary investigation indicates that Israni was in his car with Bravindah Mawanda when Mawanda allegedly shot him multiple times. Authorities said Mawanda then fled to his home, which was nearby.

Investigators recovered a firearm “consistent with the victim’s wound” from Mawanda’s home, prosecutors said.

Mawanda will be arraigned in Lowell District Court on Tuesday, prosecutors said. It was not immediately clear if he would be represented by an attorney.
