“Will Gill lead India in Sydney?”

“Will Gill lead India in Sydney?”

There is widespread discussion over who will captain Team India in the fifth Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 after reports emerged of Rohit Sharma ready to be removed.

While some say that Jasprit Bumrah, who successfully led the Indian team in Perth, could return as captain, others hope that Virat Kohli to take charge. However, former first-class cricketer Shreevats Goswami has presented an interesting take on the captaincy conundrum.

Goswami was a teammate of Virat Kohli during their successful U-19 World Cup run in 2008. The left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman took to X (formerly Twitter) to highlight an interesting observation ahead of the fifth Test. Some pictures of India’s training session have been doing the rounds.

Shubman Gillwho was dropped for the fourth Test, was seen chatting with head coach Gautam Gambhir. He received a pat on the back from Gambhir before shaking hands with Bumrah, who is the current vice-captain of the team. Going by the pictures, Goswami feels that Gill could possibly lead India in Sydney.

“Going by a particular image, Gill to lead in the Sydney Test? So India is already looking towards the next WTC cycle. This will be interesting. #BorderGavaskarTrophy,” his tweet read.

If Gill leads the visitors in the final Test, Goswami believes the team is looking ahead.

Will Rohit Sharma make way for Gill in India’s XI for the Sydney Test?

If reports of Rohit Sharma’s elimination are to be believed, Shubman Gill may return to the Indian team for the fifth Test. In such a scenario, KL Rahul could once again open the batting with Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Gill will then take the No. 3 spot in the batting order. When Rohit opened the batting in Melbourne, Rahul was pushed down the order and Gill was left out of the side. After the game, Rohit clarified that Gill was not out but rather missed due to certain combinations.

The only way Gill can return to the team is if India decides to drop current captain Rohit Sharma.
