India vs Australia, 5th Test highlights: Bumrah scalps Khawaja on last ball of Day 1, Australia 9/1 at Stumps

India vs Australia Fifth Test, Day 1: Australia reached 9/1 at stumps after defeating India for 185 on the opening day of the fifth and final Test against Australia in Sydney on Friday.

India, who recovered from 57 for 3 to 107 for 4 at tea, lost the remaining six wickets for 78 runs in the final session.

Rishabh Pant (40 off 98) top-scored for India, while Scott Boland (4/31) was the pick of Australia’s bowlers.

In response, Australia ended the day at nine for one when Jasprit Bumrah removed Usman Khawaja off the last ball of the day.

India trails the series 1-2.

India removed Rohit Sharma and stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah sent his team to the Sydney Cricket Ground but they struggled against some fiery accurate bowling.

Kohli had a big left on his first ball and eventually departed for 17, following KL Rahul (4), Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) and Shubman Gill (20) who were out before lunch.

Regular captain and opener Rohit was “rested”, India said, after failing to surpass 10 runs in any of his five innings during the series, in which Australia led 2-1.

It was a significant move with the series on the line and could spell the end of the 37-year-old’s 67-game career.

Fellow veteran Kohli, 36, has also been under pressure since an unbeaten 100 in the first Test in Perth, and his inability to build a big score again will intensify scrutiny.

Rahul returned to opener alongside Jaiswal, and Gill returned to three.

But the ploy backfired with Rahul out softly and Mitchell Starc tempted him into a full delivery to Sam Konstas at cover.

Before the Test, there were concerns about star seamer Starc’s fitness, but he showed no discomfort and routinely troubled batsmen, finding plenty of movement.

Scott Boland came in after an initial blitz from Pat Cummins and took the big wicket of in-form Jaiswal in his first over, picked up smartly by debutant Beau Webster, on the side of the dismissed Mitchell Marsh.

The hosts were convinced that Boland had Kohli out for the next ball.

The Indian star approached Steve Smith at second slip and, diving low to his right, reached under the ball and picked it up for Marnus Labuschagne to complete the catch.

But in a big decision by third umpire Joel Wilson, he ruled that part of the ball fell to the ground and Kohli survived.

India looked destined to make it to lunch without further losses, but Nathan Lyon took an outside edge from Gill and Smith caught the ball.

Australia piled on the pressure as they came back with Kohli adding just five runs before the irrepressible Boland struck again with a ball that went wide, giving Webster the advantage at slip.

Australia will regain the Border-Gavaskar trophy for the first time since 2014-15 if they win or draw.
