A seven-month-old baby died after a car lost control on a highway and crashed into a tree. Police are currently investigating whether the accident was due to icy conditions.

The incident involved a single-vehicle collision with a yellow Honda Jazz on the A1 near Grantham in Lincolnshire, which occurred shortly after 10.50pm on Thursday. The vehicle left the southbound roadway approximately 500 yards from the Spittlegate junction, struck a tree and came to rest on the road.

The baby was rushed to hospital but died shortly after 5am on Friday, Lincolnshire Police confirmed. Another female passenger in the same vehicle suffered serious injuries, while two other passengers escaped unharmed.

despite not climate Although warnings were issued for Grantham at the time of the accident, Met Office records indicate temperatures were below freezing at 11pm on Thursday. As of Friday afternoon, the southbound carriageway remained closed and drivers were advised to take a detour onto the A46.

A yellow weather warning for ice and snow will come into force for most of England, including Grantham, from midday on Saturday. An amber alert will also be in place from 6pm on Saturday until midday on Sunday, with the Met Office warning of potential travel delays on the roads and the risk of some vehicles and passengers becoming stranded.

A Lincolnshire Police spokesperson said: “The road was closed in both directions while emergency services worked, and the southbound carriageway remains closed to the motorways while investigation work is carried out along the road.” .

“We are now investigating the cause of the collision and, whilst keeping an open mind, we are considering whether this was related to icy road conditions in that area.”

“We are asking for help from anyone who may have been driving in that area over the past few days to contact any information or dash cam they may have that shows conditions over the past few days.”

“We would also be interested in seeing any footage of the collision itself and ask anyone who was traveling in that area who we have not yet spoken to to get in touch.”

The baby’s family is supported by specially trained agents. To assist their investigation, Lincolnshire Police are urging anyone with information to email [email protected], quoting incident number 382 of January 2 in the subject line, or call 01522 212316 and cite the same incident number.
