Babies moved from Glasgow hospital neonatal intensive care unit after roof leak

The babies were moved from an intensive care unit at Glasgow’s largest hospital after leaks were found in the ceiling.

Babies in the neonatal unit at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QUEH) have been moved to other parts of the unit or to the Royal Children’s Hospital adjacent to the building.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said the decision comes after external water ingress affected several rooms within the building.

The leak was discovered during scheduled maintenance work at the QUEH Maternity Unit, which has capacity for 40 patients.

No timeline was set for repairing the damage, but the health board apologized to patients’ families for the disruption, which has affected overall capacity.

The neonatal unit was built in 2009 and provides complex care for the smallest and sickest babies.

A spokesperson said: “We continue to fully play our role as a national specialist care centre, working with the network of maternity and neonatal units across Scotland to ensure care is provided in suitable facilities across Scotland.

“We would like to apologize to the families of the babies in our care for any distress this incident has caused them.

“Our teams keep you fully informed of any changes we need to make to ensure continuity of service.

“We would like to make it clear that this is not related to any infection control issues or the water supply in the hospital.”
