Mozambique NGOs want Ramaphosa to intervene in political deadlock – SABC News

Mozambican non-profit organizations have written a letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa asking him to intervene in the current political crisis in that country.

They say they hold the Mozambique Electoral Commission responsible for alleged irregularities during the registration process.

The organizations want Ramaphosa to use South Africa’s role in the SADC region to call for the suspension of the inauguration of FRELIMO’s Daniel Chapo as president of Mozambique.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International executive director Irungu Houghton says SADC must try to find a solution to the current political standoff in Mozambique.

“We have been watching developments for the past two months. We are very concerned about the more than 100 deaths we have seen. We have repeatedly called on SADC and the international community to intervene to ensure that loss of life is safeguarded. “We will continue to do so until we see that human rights are protected in the context of Mozambique.”
