RFMF will play a secondary role in the drug fight – FBC News

The Military Forces of the Republic of Fiji will now provide a support role to the Police in the fight against the drug crisis.

The Minister of Defense, Pio Tikodadua, affirms that Fiji’s police force will continue to be the main agency to address this crisis.

Their comments occur when there are growing calls for the RFMF to intervene directly, since the drug problem is increasing in the country.

The minister says that the discipline, experience and resources of the RFMF could mobilize in specific circumstances, for example, logistical support, intelligence exchange or a national emergency where additional labor is required.

Tikodadua says that while understanding the emotions behind these appeals, they must carefully consider the nature of this crisis and the constitutional role of the RFMF.

“Let’s start with the RFMF mandate under section 131 of the Constitution of Fiji. This section makes it clear that the main responsibility of the RFMF is to guarantee the security, defense and well -being of the set people. The Army is an institution that protects the very fabric of our society, and is ready to act every time the well -being of people is at risk. However, we must also recognize the deliberate limits that exist. “

Tikodadua underlines the preparation of the RFMF does not mean that it is the first solution to all the challenges faced by the nation.

“Deployment of the military is a serious decision that should only be taken as the last resort, and only in situations in which civil mechanisms have been used and found completely insufficient.”

The minister says that deploying the army for the law and the application runs the risk of undermining professionalism and civil approach to the police force.
