NBA announces scoring error in Warriors’ victory against Blazers and adjusts score a day later | News, results, highlights, statistics and rumors

A scoring error that occurred in the Golden State Warriors’ season-opening victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday was corrected a day after the game was played.

The NBA announced Thursday that De’Anthony Melton was credited with an extra point and the final score of the game was changed to a 140-104 victory for the Warriors due to an incorrectly assessed missed free throw late in the third quarter.

Yahoo Sports Jack Baer He noted that it is “uncommon” for the NBA to announce an error and change the final score in part because it could fall under the misapplication of the official rules of the game.

If this game had been close and the Warriors had lost, they could have filed a protest that would have allowed part of the game to be replayed.

Fortunately, the Warriors had no problems dealing with the Blazers. They outscored Portland 79-51 between the second and third quarters to open the game.

The score was 91-67 when Melton went to the charity stripe with 2:00 left in the third quarter.

Melton finished with 11 points in 19 minutes after score review. This marked the fourth time In the history of the Warriors franchise, they have scored at least 140 points in a season opener. It happened most recently at the start of the 1990-91 season, when they beat the Denver Nuggets 162-158.
