Former Hochul assistant faces new positions in the case of China

A former assistant of two governors in New York and her husband face additional charges in a claim that acted as an agent of the Chinese government, prosecutors said. Linda Sun and Chris Hu declared themselves innocent in the Federal Court of Brooklyn.

Sun, who held key charges in the state government, allegedly pushed the interests of China, including the blockade of Taiwanese officials to meet with the governor. In return, Hu received commercial favors in China. The couple also used funds linked to China to buy luxury properties and cars. Prosecutors expanded money laundering charges against both, while Hu faces three new positions.

Sun’s lawyers argue that they are being unfairly attacked due to their wealth and ethnicity. Prosecutors argue that he hid his role as a foreign agent. The case is part of a broader effort to take energetic measures against Chinese influence covert in the United States.
