She threw the baby from the window of the second floor of a hotel in the 20th district in the East of Paris, said the prosecutor’s office.

“The newborn received emergency care but did not survive,” prosecutors said.

The baby died at 7:45 am (0645 GMT) at Robert Debre hospital, a police source told AFP.

The police had been alerted after a baby wrapped in a cloth, with his umbilical cord still united, had been discovered in front of the hotel, said the police source.

The mother, an 18 -year -old American student, had given birth in a room on the second floor of the hotel and then threw her son out the window, according to the source.

French officials said they had launched a murder investigation, adding that the young woman, who was “part of a group of young adults traveling in Europe,” had been arrested.

The mother was taken to the hospital where she underwent a treatment after her birth, the prosecutor’s office reported.

Paris Match, citing her own information, reported that the child’s mother was on a study trip to Paris with other students from the United States.
