The relatives of the man killed by the dangerous driver ask for change to the “outdated” laws

The family of the man killed by a dangerous driver says they will campaign for toughest sentences for those convicted of committing such crimes on the island.

Thomas, 29, suffered catastrophic wounds after the incident in Harbor Road, Ulanch, on the night of February 25 last year and died in the specialized unit at the Aintree hospital in Liverpool eight days later.

During Paul’s sentence hearing this week, Demster Graeme Cook pointed out that any person condemned by death for driving dangerously on the island of Man can only receive a maximum of 14 years in prison, while the maximum sentence is life imprisonment in England and Wales.

Deemster Cook said that any prayer imposed would have to reflect that limit.

While Jordan’s family has no criticism of the Deemster or prosecutor Roger Kane, they feel that the “outdated” laws on the island should change.

Jordan’s sister, Jade, said: ‘We, as a family, are not happy with the sentence imposed on Jackson Paul, but this is not a reflection of Roger Kane or the Deemster.

‘This is due to our obsolete laws, and we will continue our struggle for Jordan requesting that our laws change so that they coincide with those of the United Kingdom that entails a maximum perpetual chain sentence for death by dangerous driving.

“While no prayer will bring Jordan back, we feel that six years for Jordan’s death is not enough.”

In the trial earlier this month, the jury did not believe in Paul’s claims that he was under the immediate threat of being killed or suffering serious injuries at the hands of Mr. Thomas. They also believed that Paul’s actions were not a reasonable and competent motorist.

Central of the Prosecutor’s case were two videos of mobile phones taken by Paul’s passenger. The first showed Thomas in the hood and the second captured at the time Thomas backed up on the road after Paul suddenly stopped.

Deemster Cook told the court that there were no sentence guidelines to help him and that it would depend on the guidelines of the English sentence council, although he said they were not binding.

However, he said: “In doing so, I must take into account that the maximum prayer with the guide of this crime in England and Wales is life imprisonment and, therefore, there must be a downward adjustment on the island.”

In addition to being imprisoned for six years, Paul was also forbidden to drive for eight years and will have to resume his driving exam.
