The FIA World Endurance Championship has confirmed the introduction of a new driver’s compensation ballast system, which will take effect for the opening round of this week in Qatar.

Announced before the start of the free practice of 1812 km this week, the new rules aim than the average.

As previously reported by Sportscar365The reference weight has been established in 82 kg for Hypercar and LMGT3 classes, which means that a crew whose conductors weigh, for example, 70 kg would need to apply 12 kg additional ballast.

The driver’s weights are calculated, including the full kit, such as the Hans helmet and device, plus the insert of the seat, with the average rounded to the closest entire number. The planned fluctuations of the driver’s weight during a race are taken into account.

The additional ballast should be applied in the designated location or locations, with the distribution of homologated weight of the car.

For the qualification and hyperpolia, the ballast that will be added to each car is based on an average of only the drivers who participate in those sessions, with the amount based on the weight of all the conductors that will be applied for the career and practice sessions .

All drivers in Hypercar and LMGT3 participated in an official weighing during the prologue last week, but the technical delegates reserve the right to perform random controls until one hour before qualifying.

In cases where a driver is below the originally declared weight, an additional ballast penalty will be applied.
