Wec presents driver’s compensation ballast rules

The conductor compensation ballast rules have been entered both to the classes of Hypercares and LMGT3 of the FIA ​​Wec for the first game of the 2025 season in Qatar on Friday.

These new rules, which aim to eliminate the disadvantage of some driver teams with heavier and higher drivers, come after drivers were asked in both classes to attend a weighing during the prologue test last week in Qatar.

The rules indicate that the weight of the reference crew has been established, as expected, at 82 kg, which means that the equipment that has a combined average weight that is under that figure will have the ballast applied to your car.

An example of how the average will be calculated in a newsletter published on the online advertisements of the championship this morning.

The three minimum pesos of the driver for each crew (the weight of each driver with their full security clothes) will be added and divided by three. This gives the average.

For example:

Driver (1) = 77.8 kg
Driver (2) = 80.2 kg
Driver (3) = 82.9 kg

The calculation produces the following average: (77.8 + 80.2 + 82.9)/3 = 80.3 kg.

This means that the ballast applied to the car would be 2 kg, since there are 1.7 kg and the ballast will be rounded to the highest integer.

The minimum compensated car weight will also be calculated separately to qualify in hypercar with a “minimum compensated car weight” figure.

In Hipercar, the ballast “must be placed in one of the BOP ballast positions within the Auto Army base” and “the distribution of the approved weight must be respected.”

And in LMGT3, the ballast must be placed inside the ballast box in the cabin of each car.

Technical delegates can also request random verifications on the driver’s weights up to one hour before qualifying. If the driver’s weight is lower than the minimal figure declared, butlers will be informed.

“The minimum penalty,” continues the document, “will be an increase in driver’s compensation ballast and, if applicable, rating/compensation tile of the hyperpolual driver, by difference between the weight of the driver measured and declared, rounded to the entire number plus high.

“It is the team’s responsibility to calculate the minimum appropriate compensated car weight (and/or the minimum weight of the compensated rating/hyperpolar car) and applying the correct amount of ballast accordingly.”
