Montana’s man faces the sentence for threats against McCarthy

A man from Montana, Richard Rogers, is ready for the sentence after being convicted of threatening the former president of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy. Rogers, angry at the management of the government of a Chinese spy balloon, made more than 100 calls to the McCarthy office, using obscene language and emitting threats.

Prosecutors seek a two -year prison sentence, arguing that threats against public officials should be deterred. Rogers’s defense defends probation, claiming that his calls were an act of civil disobedience. His case is part of a broader increase in threats against legislators.

With the judgment that favor a shorter term due to their lack of criminal record, the judge’s decision could establish a precedent amid growing threats aimed at US politicians.
