The New York Mayor omits the forum while waiting for legal destiny | News, sports, jobs

New York (AP) – The Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, withdrew from a candidate forum on Wednesday with many of his opponents in the Democratic primaries, saying that his lawyer had advised him to remain away from such events until a judge decides whether to dismiss the accusation of public corruption still pending him.

“Let the Court do this process” Adams told journalists while leaving another event in the city, adding that it was a long time in the mayor campaign for other public debates and forums.

The mayor also offered a second justification for his absence of the planned forum, held by the District Council 37, the largest municipal union in the city.

The event, he said, would not include at least one candidate that was “Running in the shadows.” The comment seemed to be a little veiled reference to former governor Andrew Cuomo, who is already accumulating endorsements despite not having said publicly if he plans to enter the race.

“We need to make everyone work” Adams said. “No candidate should be able to stay out and send insinuations.”

An Adams lawyer and a campaign representative did not return a request for comments on him omitting the Mayoral Forum.

Earlier on Wednesday, Adams again asked the judge to throw the criminal case, claiming misjacious misconduct.

Adams was accused in September of accepting more than $ 100,000 in illegal campaign contributions and travel advantages of a Turkish official and others who sought to buy influence while he was president of Brooklyn Borough.

Two weeks ago, the new senior leaders of the United States Department of Justice reversed the course, ordering prosecutors in New York to leave the case with the argument that it distracted Adams from helping the repression of immigration of the Trump administration and hindering their re -election campaign.

A series of prosecutors in New York and Washington, DC, resigned instead of ordering.

In the judicial documents presented on Wednesday, Adams lawyers accused the government of incorrectly filtering a letter, the then American lawyer Danielle Sassoon wrote to the attorney general Pam Bondi explaining why the charges should not be withdrawn, and revealing that the prosecutors had planned to accuse the mayor of Justice obstruction.

Sassoon’s said “LETTER OF DECEWTED APPLICATION” was “Part of an extraordinary gust of correspondence of the Department of Internal Justice Layados” That happened after the attached attorney general Emil Bove ordered the end of the Prosecutor’s Office. The lawyers said that the public exhibition of the fight of the Internal Justice Department had interfered with the ability of Adams to receive a fair trial.

Adams declared himself innocent and insisted that he is innocent.

A request for comments was made to the Department of Justice in Washington. Bove and two lawyers from the Department of Justice are trying to make a judge from Manhattan dismissed the charges.

The judge, who canceled an April trial, appointed an external lawyer to advise him, since he decides what to do in the coming weeks.

Bove’s request to dismiss the charges had included the possibility that the charges could be reinstated after the mayor’s elections, but Adams lawyers said the possibility must be eliminated.

“Mayor Adams was prosecuted in the media long before there was an accusation. The court should take a time to consider this inescapable reality. This case, which was once just a farce, has now become cancer, and its pendency continues to cause real and irrevocable damage every day. “ they said.
