Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The Supreme Court refused Thursday to intervene in the decision of the Superior Court of Madhya Pradesh regarding the elimination of toxic waste from UCC that dates back to the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984. The waste is transferred to Pithampur in the Dhar district for elimination.

A bank that includes Judges BR GAVAI and AG Masih also refused to stop the waste disposal trial scheduled for the same day. The court indicated that the experts of Duto, NGRI and CPCB had reviewed the matter, and their recommendations were considered both by the Superior Court and by the expert panel.

With respect to the first trial scheduled on February 27, the Supreme Court declared that additional measures must be taken according to the order of the Superior Court of Madhya Pradesh. I also appreciate the ongoing efforts that are carried out under the guidance of experts.

The bank advised the affected parties, including members of civil society, who raise their concerns before the Superior Court, which is already handling the case.

40 years of worse disaster in the world

On February 25, the Supreme Court had sought details about the security measures in force for the elimination process. Approximately 377 tons of hazardous waste from the missing Union carbide factory were transported to a elimination installation in Pithampur, located about 250 km from Bhopal and 30 km from Indore.

The Bhopal gas tragedy, one of the worst industrial disasters of the world, occurred on December 2 to 3, 1984, when the highly toxic gas methyl isocyanate (MIC) leaked from the carbide plant of the Union. The disaster resulted in the death of 5,479 people and more than five Lakh was injured.
