Spring Melt begins as the flood alerts issued for Thames River

It is likely that floods and dangerous river routes are in the next few days as the rain begins to fall during the night in the London area.

Environment Canada forecasts up to 25 mm of rain until Wednesday, with soft temperatures that melt the snow batteries accumulated this winter. Even more unusual for this time of the year are the thunderstorms that the weather agency is predicting.

“The frozen terrain has a reduced capacity to absorb this rain,” said Environment Canada in a flood warning statement.

This message is being repeated by the conservation authority of the Upper Thames River (UTRCA), which has been monitoring in the river and monitoring the amount of water in the snow layer.

“We have been executing our models, and spring melting is starting,” said Eleanor Heagy of the Conservation Authority.

“The streams, rivers, streams in rural areas and ditches and ponds will be dangerous,” said Heagy. “Any ice that is in any of the ponds will be really weak and unstable. So stay away from the stay out of any ice.”

The warning also applies to people and their dogs walking along the Thames river in the city.

“Please, be sure, especially as March’s break is approaching. Children are not thinking about the dangers when they have fun.”

In the past, London has seen important floods in Harris Park, at Western University, and occasionally along the tributary of North Branch on Adelaide street.

Last summer, a girl drowned on the Thames River when she was thrown from Adelaide Street and Kipps Lane.
