Hacked information from state security databases sold to rich clients: Milan prosecutors – POLITICO

The confidential data, which was allegedly sold to clients or used to blackmail businessmen and politicians, including former Milan mayor Letizia Moratti, dates back to at least 2019 and continued until March 2024. A court document seen by Reuters showed.

Milan prosecutors allege the business intelligence agency took advantage three key databases: one that collects alerts about suspicious financial activities; one used by the national tax agency with citizens’ banking transactions, utility bills, income statements; and the police investigation database.

According to the prosecutor’s documentsone of the suspects, Nunzio Samuele Calamucci, had to manage “an enormous amount of data equivalent to at least 15 terabytes.”

The country’s anti-mafia prosecutor, Giovanni Melillo, said at the press conference that the case had revealed “a gigantic and alarming confidential data market.”
