It’s largely been a disappointing season for the Michigan Wolverines, but they earned the right to badmouth their rivals after defeating Michigan State 24-17 on Saturday.

And they talked trash, especially after a fight broke out in the final seconds of the victory.

“Little brother, keep doing little brother things,” Michigan tight end Colston Loveland told the Big Ten Network in his postgame interview (h/t Larry Lage of the Associated Press). “So MSU is the little brother. They can do whatever they want. We knew it was going to get tough. Everything within the confines of the game, we do it well. And then if they want to be busy, we’ll do it.” get to work.”

Lage noted that Loveland was directly involved in the skirmish, as he and Michigan State defensive end Anthony Jones shoved each other before players from both teams came together.

“I told the team that was unacceptable,” Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said.

This is nothing new for these teams, as they also fought inside the tunnel two years ago. As Lage noted, the Big Ten fined the state of Michigan $100,000 for the incident and publicly reprimanded Michigan for not providing enough protection with its tunnel configuration.

As for Saturday, there was surely some frustration about the season as a whole that boiled over on both teams.

The Spartans are 4-4 and have crushing losses to Oregon and Ohio State on their resume. And the Wolverines will not defend their national title after a 5-3 start that includes double-digit losses to Texas, Washington and Illinois.

It probably won’t improve much for Michigan either considering it still plays Oregon, Indiana and Ohio State in its last four games.

But at least he earned state bragging rights with Saturday’s performance, and Loveland made sure to let the Spartans know it afterward.
