United’s view on paying compensation for a new manager following the sacking of Erik ten Hag gives a big clue to their replacement plan.

Manchester United have officially parted ways with Erik ten Hag as manager after almost an entire season of rumors and scrutiny surrounding the Dutchman.

The defeat against West Ham United turned out to be the last straw for Erik ten Hag and will leave United in 14th place in the league standings.

Combine that with 21st place in the Europa League table and his tenure had quickly reached an unsustainable state as the season progressed rapidly.

United confirmed that Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge on an interim basis of the team as they work to appoint a permanent manager.

With no clear leading candidate emerging at this time after Thomas Tuchel accepted the England jobUnited might have to be ambitious and look for a manager for the job right now.

Manchester United’s position on the payment of compensation

During the second international break it was reported that one factor that kept Ten Hag in the job was the large amount of compensation United would have to pay to sack him.

This is of course belied by the club’s decision, but the decision to keep the rest of the staff probably saved the club millions in wages.

However, if none of the candidates currently available on the market appeal to them, they will have to broaden their search to people who already have a job.

That would require additional compensation to buy the candidate out of his current role, but it is a sign of United’s plans for a replacement that they are reportedly willing to do so.

TalkSport reports that United are not reluctant to pay compensation if it would get them their preferred candidate for the job.

It means that your search will no longer be limited to unemployed managers and this is cause for great optimism among Manchester United fans.

Interesting candidates with expanded search

Now that United are not concerned about paying compensation, some interesting candidates are sure to enter the fray as potential replacements.

United have been linked with Thomas Frank in the past and they will only become stronger with this posture.

Also, if they want a young, forward-thinking manager, they could go to Ipswich and buy Kieran McKenna’s contract there.

Sporting’s Ruben Amorim is in the picture, while Julian Nagelsmann, currently in Germany, would probably be the dream candidate for many United fans.

This crop of names is much more exciting and ambitious than current unemployed managers like Graham Potter or Xavi Hernández.

No doubt they will still be sounded out and spoken to, but if money is not an issue – and it shouldn’t be for a position as important as United manager – then the club can afford to aim high.

Many would say the club made a mistake by not sacking Ten Hag sooner. But not everything is lost yet and the most important decision when it comes to getting it right is who will replace him.

They are off to a good start with this stance.
