Westmorland and Furness Council meets to discuss how to repair road

A trail washed out during Storm Ashley will be replaced.

The path at Earnse Bay in Barrow, Cumbria, was destroyed over the weekend when bad weather caused it to erode and slide onto the beach.

Westmorland and Furness Council said they were working with contractors to remove fencing and ensure the public could still walk around the countryside.

The council said it would meet Labor MP Michelle Scrogham at the site to discuss how to fix the road.

The council has put up signs to guide walkers to safety in the affected areas.

The Earnse Bay section of the walkway is part of the King Charles III England Coastal Trail, a national trail that will take in the entire English coastline when completed.

Although the trail is not a public right-of-way, it is subject to “setback” legislation, meaning it can move inland as the coastline erodes.

Councilor Giles Archibald said he understood residents’ concerns about coastal erosion.

“The recent damage caused by Storm Ashley over the weekend is a reminder that climate change remains the challenge of our generation and we need to anticipate the additional impacts this will have on our environment and our way of life. “he stated.

“We have been in regular contact with residents and communities for many years and will continue to work closely and collaborate with them, as well as businesses and stakeholders, to manage the situation within current resources.”
