The fire broke out above a takeaway pizzeria in Sheffield.

Firefighters rescued a man from a burning building in Sheffield.

Fire crews were called at 09:09 BST to reports of a fire at a first-floor apartment on City Road.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said there were people in the property, which is above Toppolis Pizza Grill House, when the fire broke out.

Station manager Matt Craig said two people had been taken to hospital, including the man who was rescued.

He said the call for service suggested there were still people in the apartment and that specialized turntable ladders had been sent to the scene.

However, most people had left the property before arriving, Craig said.

After receiving a report that someone was still inside the burning apartment, firefighters used breathing apparatus to enter the building.

“They were able to get the last person off the property pretty quickly,” Craig said.

Several people had already been able to leave the apartment before the firefighters arrived.

Hose jets were used to extinguish the fire,” Craig said.

“It was a serious fire in which one person was taken to hospital with foot injuries from broken glass and minor smoke inhalation.”

A second person was also taken to hospital after suffering smoke inhalation, the fire service added.
