Peter Buttery, driving a Fiat 500, caused a collision while trying to overtake traffic on a bend

A dangerous driver has been jailed for causing “profound” injuries to three other road users.

Peter Buttery, 64, was driving a Fiat 500 on the B1248 near Malton when he attempted to overtake on a bend on August 6, 2021.

An oncoming Mazda MX5 was forced to brake, before skidding and crashing into Buttery’s Fiat and a motorcycle.

Buttery, of Elsie Street, Goole, was found guilty of three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving in September and was jailed for three years and 10 months at Hull Crown Court on Thursday.

The court heard the motorcyclist, a man in his 60s, suffered fractured vertebrae, ribs, a broken wrist, a punctured lung and internal injuries.

In a victim personal statement, he said: “The collision will forever have a profound effect on me, physically and mentally.”

He described not being able to walk more than 200 yards without the use of a cane, bend over, bathe, or sleep through the night without interruption.

“One thing I still struggle with is that I will never be able to canoe, sail, camp, backpack or hike again,” the injured man added.

“It really hurts to know this. I’m doing everything I can to have a normal life, but it’s hard.”

Two people in the Mazda were also injured with broken bones, facial scars and nerve damage.

The injured motorcyclist said the accident had a “profound effect” on him physically and mentally.

After the sentencing, TC Joseph Schramm, of North Yorkshire Police, said evidence showed Buttery was on the wrong side of the road leading to the accident and had made a “dangerous overtake”.

“Despite this, during the interrogation he tried to blame one of the victims for the collision, but he did not take any responsibility and did not show any remorse throughout the trial,” he added.

“It’s only fair that he now has to be held accountable for his actions.”

In addition to his jail term, Buttery was also banned from driving for three years and 11 months and required to pass a lengthy test before regaining his driving licence.
