Charges filed in high-speed crash in south Des Moines in August

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines woman faces multiple charges in connection with a South Side crash that injured several people in August.

Latayah Shumpert, 27, is charged with 10 counts of serious injury by vehicle, a class D felony, and one count of driving while prohibited, an aggravated misdemeanor.

The charges are related to a high-speed accident that occurred on the morning of August 28.th in the 7000 block of Bloomfield Road. Criminal complaints filed in the case say Shumpert was driving recklessly and speeding well above 65 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone when he collided with another vehicle. Shumpert and five other occupants, between the two cars, suffered serious injuries in the accident.

Court documents say a blood test found no alcohol in Shumpert’s system, but did test positive for methadone.

Shumpert was booked into the Polk County Jail on Wednesday. She is being held on $42,000 bail.

Preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for November 4th.
