Charges filed in high-speed crash in south Des Moines in August

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines woman faces multiple charges in connection with a South Side crash that injured several people in August.

Latayah Shumpert, 27, is charged with 10 counts of serious injury by vehicle, a class D felony, and one count of driving while prohibited, an aggravated misdemeanor.

The charges are related to a high-speed accident that occurred on the morning of August 28.^th in the 7000 block of Bloomfield Road. Criminal complaints filed in the case say Shumpert was driving recklessly and speeding well above 65 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone when he collided with another vehicle. Shumpert and five other occupants, between the two cars, suffered serious injuries in the accident.

Court documents say a blood test found no alcohol in Shumpert’s system, but did test positive for methadone.

Shumpert was booked into the Polk County Jail on Wednesday. She is being held on $42,000 bail.

Preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for November 4^th.
