Political newcomer running for Ward 1 council seat in Bloomington

A political newcomer said Friday he is running for the District 1 city council seat in Bloomington.

Benjamin “Ben” Zimmerman said he is a lifelong resident of central Illinois, having lived in the Blooming Grove area of ​​the city since 2005 and before that in the South Hill neighborhood. He has lived in Bloomington since 1999.

In a news release, Zimmerman said he is running because of “a deep sense of duty and a willingness to serve,” adding that his “upbringing emphasized service to others and respect for the community.”

He said public safety, infrastructure, homelessness and the financial impact on taxpayers are key issues for him.

“It’s important for local elected officials to listen to the people,” Zimmerman said. “I am here to be an open ear and receptive voice for the residents of District 1.”

Zimmerman is an IT consultant at HCL Tech. He said he also worked at State Farm.

“I will advocate for practical solutions and greater transparency, focusing on making Bloomington a safe and prosperous place for all,” Zimmerman said.

He current district 1 council member is Jenna Kearnswho emerged from a field of seven candidates and was appointed to fill the vacancy created by Jamie Mathy’s resignation in 2022. Kearns, who also filed nomination petitions, said that in 2023 her top priorities were housing and infrastructure.
