Magoffin County woman wins best birthday gift

MAGOFFIN, Ky. (WYMT) – Brianna Vanhoose of Salyersville received a Kentucky scratch-off ticket from her aunt as a birthday gift.

To Vanhoose’s surprise, his ticket won $50,000.

Vanhoose told lottery officials that she does not normally play the lottery.

“This was the first time I bought the $50 ticket,” her aunt said. “I bought two tickets, scratched one off and gave him another one for his birthday.”

After purchasing the tickets, Vanhoose and his aunt stopped by his mother’s house, which was near the store. It was there that he discovered he had a winning ticket.

“She (aunt) won $75, so I thought, ‘okay, well, I’m not going to win anything,’” Vanhoose said. “I scratched it, saw it and ran away.”

Vanhoose traveled to Louisville on Oct. 15 to receive a check for $36,000 after taxes.

Vanhoose still finds it hard to believe he won the lottery.

“I still don’t know what to think,” he said. “It still doesn’t seem real.”

Kash Stop #2 in Salyersville, where the winning ticket was sold, will receive $500.
