UFC 308 got off to a lively start with the opening bout on the preliminary card between Rinat Fakhretdinov and Carlos Leal sparking controversy over how the judges scored the fight.

Fakhretdinov was victorious by unanimous decision, with one of the judges scoring all three rounds for the Russian fighter.

The consensus opinion among fans and analysts was that this score was a joke and that Leal clearly won the fight.

Yeah @danawhite I have to do something about the evaluation in the @ufc. It’s legitimately killing the sport. Carlos Leal was absolutely robbed.

Adam Martin @MMAdamMartin

Thank you @felderpaul for keeping it real and showing the judges a new one.
This is a complete joke. The UFC needs to pay Carlos Leal his win bonus, treat this as a win for his record and get rid of Judge Rinat 30-27. #UFC308

Official UFC statistics tracking showed Leal landing four more significant strikes in the first two rounds, and doubling Fakhretdinov in total strikes landed in the first round (56 to 28). Fakhretdinov’s only advantage in the first round was a takedown, but Leal was never in danger and got back up.
