I remember thinking at the time, ‘Well, if everyone doesn’t have a home, they’re all going to be very sad.’ .’ But it was incredible how happy the atmosphere was.” This is believed to be the first time in years that William, the heir to the throne, has publicly mentioned his brother, Harry, since their rift began with Spare’s release.

Recalling a childhood memory with her brother, when her mother took them to The Passage, she describes how the experience opened her eyes to the harsh reality of homelessness. Through simple activities like playing chess and chatting, he realized that not everyone lived like he did. As he explains, “when you’re very little, you think life is what you see in front of you,” but meeting people with different experiences left a lasting impression on him.

“It’s when you meet people, like I did then, that put a different perspective in your head and say, ‘Well, last night I was living on the streets,’ and you say, ‘Woah.’ I remember that happening,” William said.

Following that visit, William took on patronage roles for charities The Passage and Centrepoint and even spent a night on the streets in 2009 to understand first-hand what it feels like to be homeless. Despite their current distance, Harry has also continued Diana’s legacy with projects such as the Invictus Games, efforts in digital security in addition to his other charitable works.

Reflecting on his mother’s influence, Harry shared in a 2017 interview with Newsweek, “My mother played a huge role in showing me a normal life, even taking me and my brother to see homeless people.”
