David Amess’s murdered daughter breaks family silence after ‘world shattered’ when terrorist stabs MP to death

SIR DAVID Amess’ daughter has told how her family’s “world was shattered” when a terrorist stabbed her MP father to death.

Sir David, 69, was brutally murdered outside his constituency surgery in a savage knife attack in October 2021.

Jihadist Ali Harbi Ali admitted killing Sir David but denied murder, claiming he was protecting his fellow Muslims with the brutal attack.

Now, for the first time since deputies death, Sir David’s daughter Katie has spoken of how her “world was shattered”.

The 39-year-old actress also expressed anger at the “failures” of the police and the Home Office, who did not intervene even though they knew Ali.

Katie revealed she was struggling to talk about the moment she discovered her father had been stabbed.

“None of this seems real to me,” he said.

She has been diagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder and is in therapy.

Katie spent months after her father’s death watching hours of footage, from his speeches in the House of Commons to moments of him enjoying life at a family barbecue.

“I was afraid to forget it, but now I know I won’t because I’m part of it,” she added.

Katie’s mother Julia, 70, had to move out of the family home, where they had lived for three decades, because she found it too difficult to stay.

Despite the tragic loss of her father, the 39-year-old cherishes the time she spent with him.

Katie said: “I loved spending time with him and he made a lot of time for me, inviting my friends over for a barbecue, throwing a party for each of my birthdays and visiting old country houses.”

Sir David Amess was nicknamed “Mr. Southend” due to his long campaign to secure city status for southA goal that was achieved when the Queen granted it to her after her death.

Katie recalled that the family received thousands of letters from residents expressing their sadness at the loss of their beloved MP.

On the day of the attack, Sir David Amess, eager to speak to his constituents, arrived at his surgery in Leigh-on-Sea.

There was no security or police presence.

Ali Harbi Ali traveled by train from his home in the North Londonand within minutes of arriving and sitting in front of the MP, he stabbed Amess more than 20 times.

Ali was sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison in 2022.

In 2015, when he was 18, Ali was visited by an officer from the Home Office Prevent, in one of the first two scheduled meetings, and had a second scheduled meeting that never happened, before his case was closed in 2016.

A Home Office spokesperson said in a statement: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Sir David Amess.

“The attack on Sir David Amess was a terrible tragedy, the safety of Members of Parliament is paramount and significant work has been done in response to his tragic murder.

“Prevention is a vital tool to prevent people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism and addresses all ideological causes of terrorism.”
