Michigan football’s Colston Loveland criticizes MSU for ‘little brother’ antics

Over the past decade and a half, the football rivalry between Michigan and Michigan State has earned a reputation as one of the nastiest state matchups in all of college football.

That continued on Saturday night, when an altercation broke out on the Michigan Stadium field immediately following the Wolverines’ 24-17 victory over the Spartans. In a postgame interview with the Big Ten Network, Michigan tight end Colston Loveland criticized Michigan State for its ‘little brother’ antics in the loss.

“Yeah, I mean, little brother, keep doing little brother things, you know.” Loveland said. “So, MSU, they’re little brothers. They can do whatever they want. We know it’s going to get tough, but everything within the confines of the game we do well. And then if they want to be busy, we do.” I’ll be busy.”

Following his on-field postgame interview with the Big Ten Network, Loveland was asked about the altercation that occurred as time ran out. The junior admitted he had been talking trash and got carried away with the emotions of the rivalry late in the game.

“It always gets spicy,” he repeated. “I got a little carried away at the end, you know? We were talking back and forth, pushing each other and stuff. But that’s how the rivalry becomes. It’s all just the heat of the moment. Coming off two losses, I really needed this “So I was excited, but yeah, we respect all the opponents we played. Obviously, it came down to the wire, but we’re proud of the way they fought and I came out with the win.”

Big brother has enjoyed a string of successes in this series against little brother, with Michigan winning three in a row over Michigan State in the rivalry. Those three wins coincided with Loveland’s three seasons in Ann Arbor, and with the tight end almost certainly heading to the NFL next season, he will finish his Wolverine career undefeated against the Spartans.

“Yeah, 3-0. A blessing, for sure, because I know how much this rivalry means to everyone,” Loveland said.

The junior tight end was an integral part of Michigan’s offensive success on Saturday, with six receptions for 67 yards and two touchdowns against Michigan State.
