‘Don’t Move’ Ending Explained: Why Did Iris Say ‘Thank You?’

From producer Sam Raimi, don’t move introduces Iris, played by Yellowstone Kelsey Asbillea grieving mother still consumed by the loss of her young son, Mateo. Viewers learn that he died in a tragic hiking accident, and Iris, upon visiting the fatal spot where he fell, appears to contemplate a similar fate.

However, a man named Richard (Finn Wittrock) is also there and talks Iris off the ledge. He shares an emotional story about how his graduate school girlfriend, Chloe, died in a car accident that left him immobilized for months. He says that loss ultimately didn’t break him.

Richard arrives at the man’s cabin and forces his way in by posing as her husband looking for her after a car accident. While his plan almost works, Richard’s phone rings, revealing his original lie that he needed to borrow Bill’s phone after losing it in the accident.

Richard eventually kills Bill and sets fire to the cabin. Paralyzed behind the couch, Iris manages to gain enough strength to open and close the blinds, alerting Richard to her presence and saving his life.

While in the car, Richard receives a call from his family, who tell him that they plan to spend a weekend with him at the cabin. Now, he is forced to change his plans with Iris. “We could have had a really nice weekend together,” he says, but now he has to “skip to the end.”

Then, they stop at a gas station. Iris makes eye contact with a boy whose mother suspects something might be wrong and subtly calls the police. While your car is stopped, an officer pulls up next to the vehicle. Richard tries to lie again, but the officer realizes his deception and finds the paralyzing drug in the car. Richard kills him too.

Iris is still trapped in the car with Richard and slowly regains control of her vocal cords. Gradually, she begins to ask him about his family and viewers learn that he started killing people after seeing his girlfriend die after a fatal car accident.

He revealed that the incident did not make him lose his mind, but it helped him find clarity. “My whole life I felt disconnected. Until those moments after the accident. I can still see the angle of his neck. The way the light reflected off the glass on his lap,” says Richard. “And when I saw that she was taking her last breath, I finally felt connected. I lived that moment over and over again, lying in that bed trying to figure out if I had felt God. And finally I realized that it was. And He was me.”

His last words to her were “thank you” because her death helped him realize that. Since his family will be arriving soon, Richard decides to leave the cabin and heads directly to the lake; he puts Iris in a rowboat and prepares to kill her.

But fortunately, Iris is regaining her ability to move at the same time. While on the boat, he stabs Richard in the face with his own hunting knife and shoots him with his gun. He falls overboard and Iris somehow manages to make it to shore as the boat, which is riddled with bullet holes, sinks beneath her.

He arrives at the dock only to look and see that Richard also managed to get out of the lake. He is bleeding to death, but before he dies, she tells him “thank you,” the same words he said to his first girlfriend before she died.

Co-director Brian Netto told Tudum that the “thank you” at the end of don’t move It has a double meaning. “It’s double-edged, because she’s sticking it to him on the one hand, but there’s a genuine understanding on her part of, ‘Wow, okay, I owe my life to this man because I didn’t want to fight for my life.’ before I met him.’”

Raimi said that the “thank you” is much more sincere than it seems. “Kelsey put her heart into the movie and really took that journey from someone who had no hope, (to) someone who had hope again,” he explained. “I know this because I feel very moved by the ending of this movie. “He has soul and knows how to show it to the public.”

He added: “I believe in the phrase in the best sense of it: ‘Thank you for inspiring me to live again.'”

Meanwhile, Asbille told the streamer that the final moments signify when “Iris chooses to live, not just survive.” She continued, “That’s what resonated with me, desperately fighting to overcome something that has left you paralyzed.”
