Australia: 11-year-old boy dead and four seriously injured after car crashes into school fence | World news

A child was killed and several injured after a car crashed into a primary school in Australia, police said.

The car left a road in the suburb of Hawthorn East, Melbourneand crashed into a fence and an outdoor table where five children were sitting shortly after 2:30 p.m. local time.

An 11-year-old boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but later died.

Two 11-year-old girls, a 10-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy were also taken to hospital with serious injuries, Victoria Police said.

The driver of the car, a 40-year-old woman, crashed into the fence while making a U-turn after picking up a child from school.

She was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody.

The child who was a passenger in the vehicle was not injured.

“It appears this is a tragic accident,” said Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy, of the Major Collision Investigation Unit.

Video footage from the scene showed the car with damage to the front left side.

Police are investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.
