The RNLI said strong winds forecast for New Year’s Day could lead to more dangerous conditions on southwestern coasts.

People planning to go swimming on New Year’s Day have been advised to make an “informed decision” amid a weather warning for south-west England.

Chris Cousens, from the RNLI, also said people visiting the coast should keep a safe distance from the sea due to the expected strong winds.

The Meteorological Office said that period of strong winds during Wednesday it can cause “some disturbances.”

Cousens said the strong winds could cause “more dangerous than normal conditions on the coast.”

‘Better call’

He said: “Our advice at the RNLI is that if you plan to visit the coast, make sure you stay a safe distance from the water. “The conditions could knock you over and drag you out to sea.

“If you’re visiting to see the waves, it’s not worth getting too close because that might happen.”

He also advised people who found themselves unexpectedly in the water and in difficulty to remember the “float to live” advice.

He said: “If you see anyone else in that situation, remember to call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.

“It’s better to call and initiate an emergency response than to go in and try to rescue someone yourself.”

Cousens also advised people attending events planned for the New Year to consider the conditions on the day and make an “informed and sensible decision.”

He said: “We always advise people to join an organized event, especially when there are storms.

“This way there should be security cover in case the event takes place, and there should also be people trained and able to make an informed decision.

“As tempting as it may be to enter on the first day of the year, conditions may not allow it.

“If you can’t make a good decision about the condition, seek advice from people who know that beach and its location.”
