Omtatah and 22 others released on KSh1,000 cash bail after court rejects bid to detain them for 14 days

busia Senator Okiya Omtatah and his 22 co-defendants were released after the court rejected state prosecutors’ request to detain them for a further 14 days.

The 23 people were released on KSh1,000 bail each after appearing before Milimani Chief Magistrate Rose Ndombi.

This comes after the court reduced the bail initially set from KSh50,000 with a similar surety to KSh1,000 each, as a gesture of goodwill for the new year.

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah and his co-accused faced charges of inciting violence and civic disobedience after being arrested on Monday, December 30 during an anti-kidnapping protest in central Nairobi. Business District.

Did the state want Omtatah detained for 14 more days?

State prosecutors had previously requested to detain Omtatah and 22 others for an additional 14 days.

In his request, as reported TUKO.co.keProsecutors asked for more time to allow for thorough investigations into allegations of incitement and disobedience to the law, in violation of Article 96 of the Penal Code.
