A day after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attended a program in Sandeshkhali, senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday held a rally at the same venue and accused his government of leveling false allegations against women from the area for protesting against the alleged misdeeds of the locals. At a public meeting on the island, situated on the borders of Sundarbans in North 24 Parganas, Adhikari, leader of the opposition in the assembly, described Banerjee as a person “with mischievous intentions”.

He promised to constitute a commission of inquiry to probe the alleged atrocities committed by local TMC leaders if the BJP comes to power in the 2026 assembly elections.

“Mamata Banerjee had conspired to arrest mothers and sisters in Sandeshkhali ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. They were falsely accused and arrested for protesting against atrocities committed by local TMC strongmen like Shahjahan Sheikh. “You (Mamata Banerjee) will face legal action for inciting such oppression if the BJP comes to power,” Adhikari said.

Sandeshkhali witnessed large-scale protests earlier this year over alleged land grabbing and sexual harassment of women by local TMC leaders.

The results of the upcoming assembly elections in Sandeshkhali will favor the BJP as the Hindus have already consolidated. “They witnessed the persecution of the TMC and collectively voted against the ruling party,” he alleged.

Adhikari also claimed that the BJP had won Nandigram in the 2021 assembly elections and Tamluk in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections “with consolidated Hindu votes”, and said this “momentum will continue”.

Accusing the TMC of resorting to “unfair electoral practices”, he alleged that the nomination paper of late TMC MP from Basirhat Hazi Sk Nurul Islam was riddled with “defects” and Rekha Patra, the BJP candidate from the area in the Lok Sabha, filed a complaint with the Election Commission.
