Old Firm derby ends in chaos after Celtic player was hit by coin and police were forced to intervene

Arne Engels was hit by an object in the closing minutes of the Old Firm clash on Thursday.

The Old Firm clash ended in chaos when Celtic’s Arne Engels was hit by a coin in the closing stages of the match.

Celtic Midfielder Engels fell to the ground clutching his head after being hit by an object thrown from the ranger ends at Ibrox.

Players from both teams ran towards the scene as the linesman retrieved an object from the ground before passing it to match referee Don Robertson.

The referee then passed the coin to the fourth official, who handed it to a police officer inside the stadium.

The police officer bagged the item before play resumed.

“Absolutely ridiculous,” lamented Chris Sutton during commentary, while his commentary partner added: “That’s disgusting. There’s no place for that in football.”

Rangers achieved a famous victory over their local rivals, winning Thursday’s match 3-0.

Ianis Hagi opened the scoring in the seventh minute, and the hosts scored two goals in the second half to secure the three points and bragging rights.

Robin Propper doubled his team’s lead before Danilo scored nine minutes from time.
