Update on Sharon football player who suffered brain injury on Thanksgiving Day

Sharon soccer player Rohan Shukla moved from Mass General Hospital to rehab after a 35-day stay with a traumatic brain injury, according to the GoFundMe page created for him by his teammate Sam Letendre.

According to a Friday update from Letendre, which he attributes to Shukla’s parents, the sophomore was transferred to Neuro Rehab at Spaulding Boston Outpatient.

“Although Rohan is still in the early stages of regaining consciousness, it is a major milestone for him and we look forward to better days for him in the future,” the update reads.

Shukla, who plays safety, suffered a subdural hematoma during Sharon’s Thanksgiving Day game against Oliver Ames, which was called late in the second quarter. He was first taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton before being transferred to Mass General where, according to the GoFundMe page, he underwent surgery to control bleeding in his brain, but as of mid-December he remained in a coma.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Rohan, his parents Abhishek and Deepika, and his twin brother Naman during this incredibly difficult time,” Sharon Superintendent Peter J. Botelho and Principal Kristen Keenan wrote in a Nov. 30 statement. .

As of Friday evening, GoFundMe has raised $77,433 in 940 donations toward its goal of $100,000.

“This will be a long hospital recovery for Rohan, please continue to support this campaign to give him the best chance of recovery and leading a quality life,” the latest update read.

Other community events have been organized, including a food trainhe fighting team collecting cardsand a 10-minute online prayer service by the Sharon American Indian Association.
