Sky Sports left stumped by penalty between Rangers and Hibs as David Gray approves verdict

Sky Sports left stumped by penalty between Rangers and Hibs as David Gray approves verdict

Rangers manager Philippe Clement was left furious at full-time in their Scottish Premiership draw against Hibs over the awarding of a second-half penalty.

Philippe Clement visited John Beaton’s office after the match to demand answers as to why Ianis Hagi was penalized in the second half of the match at Easter Road.

Beaton pointed to the spot after Hagi was ruled to have fouled Josh Campbell as the pair battled for position inside the Ibrox club’s penalty area.

With the score 2-1 rangerClement believes the penalty was a “match-deciding” decision and gave Hibs hope of returning to the eventual 3-3 draw in Edinburgh.

Now, Sky Sports have been analyzing the decision and it’s fair to say that most of the Ref Watch panel were left stumped by the decision.

Sky Sports on the penalty between Rangers and Hibs

Former Premier League whistler Dermot Gallagher began by explaining the justification for John Beaton’s decision and the VAR’s refusal to intervene.

Sky Sports presenter Rob Wotton expressed doubts about the call, as did former professionals Stephen Warnock and Sue Smith.

It comes just a week after Sky Sports panel questions handball in the lead-up to Motherwell’s first goal against Rangers at Fir Park.

speaking in Sky Sports Reference Clockthe quartet said:

Dermot Gallagher: “The referee thinks he is clumsy. He thinks he can’t get the ball. And again I think this goes back to the decision on the field.

“You want the referees to have the power to make decisions, the referee has made that decision. “I don’t think the VAR is going to annul it.”

Rob Wotton: “We talk about shoulder to shoulder, not about penalties. In fact, if anything, Hagi is a little ahead of him, so I’m a little taken aback.”

DG: “That’s how I was raised when I played. That’s what they told me. If you’re next to someone, because I’m small, someone can get the ball from me. I think that is accepted.

“As you say, they taught me to cross the defender. The defender tries to cross it there but the referee considers it clumsy and awards a penalty.

“I think when you see that, the decision on the field will always stand. “The VAR is not going to intervene because it believes that it is a tangle of legs caused by the Rangers player.”

Stephen Warnock: “I don’t understand that decision at all. I just think about how that can happen and how what you see is uniformly communicated from the referee to the VAR and the VAR back.

“I think it’s enough to go to the screen and look at it again. If he sticks to his decision, you have a problem, because he doesn’t know the game.

“If you go to the screen and the VAR tells you that you made a mistake, then you make the right decision. How that applies as a penalty, I will never know.”

Sue Smith: “I totally agree, I don’t think it’s a penalty at all for all the reasons you just said there. In any case, it is the other way around.”

Hibs boss denies Philippe Clement’s claims

While the rangers manager Philippe Clement was left outraged by the decision when he arrived full-time at Easter Road; Hibs boss David Gray disagreed at all.

The former Easter Road stopper was speaking to sky sports at full time and claims that John Beaton made the right decision on the field and that VAR Kevin Clancy was right not to intervene.

“I think the wrong side of the defender,” Gray said. “(Campbell) gets to the ball and gets in front of him (Hagi).

“If you are on the wrong side, you always run the risk.

“So for me it is a clear penalty. Pretty simple from my point of view.”
