Joey Barton tells court he ‘has a bad temper’ but denies ‘kicking his wife in the head while their children were sleeping upstairs’

JOEY Barton told the court today that he can “lose his temper” but denied kicking his wife in the head while their children slept upstairs.

The former footballer allegedly attacked Georgia Barton at his home in Kew, South West London.

Barton, 42 years old, and Georgia both had drunk “four or five bottles of came” with two other couples when a fight broke out.

Westminster Magistrates Court heard the former Manchester City star threatened to fight his wife’s brother and father over a “verbal disagreement over a family matter”.

Barton then “grabbed (Georgia) and pushed her to the ground and kicked her in the head,” it was said.

The court heard that when a friend tried to intervene, Barton “brushed him off” and told him “don’t disrespect me.”

Georgia, who was left with a lump on her forehead and a bleeding nose, called police shortly after 11:00 p.m. to “report that she had been beaten by her husband.”

During a tearful 999 call in court, she said: “My husband just hit me in the house.

“He’s in the house, I’m outside.”

When asked if something similar had happened before, she said: “No, it’s the first time,” adding that she had been hit “in the face.”

When police arrived around 11:30 p.m., Georgia told them: “They pushed me down, kicked me and stuff.

“He said he was going to fight with my brother and my dad.”

Barton was arrested around midnight in his bedroom, where he had been sleeping and was still drunk.

The couple are still married and living together, the court heard.

Giving evidence, Barton admitted he had had “six to eight” drinks when the alleged attack unfolded.

He told the court there had been a “disagreement” and he “stupidly took my friend’s side”.

Barton continued: “We’ve just started insulting each other in a minor way.

“We ended up getting a little more agitated and were close to each other.”

The former soccer player admitted that he is someone who “sometimes” can lose his temper.

But he denied the allegations against him, saying: “If I kicked someone in the head, there would be a lot more harm than is alleged in this case.”

In her own statement, Georgia told the court that she and her husband had been “nose to nose” at one point, but had not come to blows.

He stated that he felt a “collision” to his head that “stunned me and caused me to fall backwards.”

Georgia, who said she had drunk a lot of wine that day, added: “It couldn’t have been Joe, he was too far away.”

Barton was due to face trial in 2022 after pleading not guilty to assault by beating, but this was halted when Georgia recanted her accusations.

The High Court ruled last year that the trial could go ahead and that the previous decision to drop the case was “wrong in principle”.

Barton married his childhood sweetheart in a lavish ceremony in 2019 at a country house in Oxfordshire.

The couple has two children together: a son born in 2011 and a daughter born in 2014.

Barton began his American football race with city of manchester in 2002 after coming through their youth system and went on to make 150 appearances for the club.

Then he moved to Newcastle UnitedEdit in a £5.8 million transfer in July 2007 before leaving for Queens Park Ranger in August 2011.

The midfielder was then loaned to French team Marseille during the 2012-13 season before arriving at Burnley for one season, helping them gain promotion to the Premier League.

Barton made an appearance for England in 2007, despite criticizing some of his colleagues.

Subsequently, the footballer attempted a managerial career with seasons in Fleetwood city and Bristol Rovers.

Barton denies a single count of assault by beating and the trial continues.
