The Seoul Court rejects the second request to extend Yoon’s arrest

Seoul: a Seoul court rejected a Second request On Saturday (January 25) to extend the arrest of the accused president Yoon Suk Yeol for his failed attempt to declare martial law, pressing prosecutors to accuse him quickly.

Yoon was arrested last week insurrection chargesbecoming the first chief of South Korean state in functions in a criminal investigation.

His martial law decree on December 3 only lasted about six hours before legislators rejected it, but still managed to sink South Korea in his worst political crisis in decades.

The Seoul Central District Court rejected a request for extension of the arrest on Saturday, prosecutors said in a brief statement.

This follows a ruling from the same court a day before when a judge declared that it was “difficult to find sufficient motifs” to grant an extension.

Prosecutors had planned to keep the leader fallen out of favor until February 6 to interrogate it before formally accusing it, but that plan must now adjust.

“With the rejection of the extension by the court, prosecutors must now work quickly to formally accuse Yoon and keep it behind bars,” Yoo Jung-Hoon, a political lawyer and commentator, told AFP.

Yoon has refused to cooperate with criminal investigation and his legal defense team argues that investigators lack legal authority.

The suspended president also faces a separate hearing in the Constitutional Court that, if he confirms his political trial, would officially dismiss him from his position.

In that case, elections would have to be held within 60 days.
